In light of recent events involving the banning and fining of Liverpool’s Luis Suarez after comments made toward Patrice Evra, and the controversial use of the word colour by Scotland’s very own Alan “Banter” Hansen, it was just a matter of time before someone else made the mistake of thinking they could get away with not engaging their brain before speaking, or in this case tweeting…

Lee Steele, 38 year old Striker pictured above, formerly of Oxford City was released from his contract by the Southern Football Premier League side for the following tweet with regards to “out” former Welsh rugby union player Gareth Thomas, who is currently appearing in Celebrity Big Brother:

“I wouldn’t fancy the bed next to Gareth Thomas #padlock my arse”

Across the internet people are trying to defend the tweet as harmless “banter” but in today’s game and of course, world in general, we don’t accept racist “banter” so why should this be any different? The correct decision was made in this instance as far as I’m concerned and I for one am glad that a team has taken a stand against this and made an example of a member of the playing squad to set a precedent for others.
